Summary General text description of the levee system with a summary of why the levee is there, and the benefits it provides.
The project consists of a federally constructed levee embankment along the left bank of the Nishnabotna River west of the City of Red Oak, IA in Montgomery County, IA. The levee embankment begins a quarter-mile upstream of U.S. Hwy 34 and runs downstream to the Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge. The original segment of the levee is 2.2 miles long but it was extended an additional 700 feet upstream in 1983. The current levee has an average height of 16 feet, a crest width of 10 feet, and 3 Horizontal: 1 Vertical sideslopes on the river side and land side. The levee system has 10 gravity drainage structures to convey interior drainage. There are 5 closure structures located at the upstream tie off, US Highway 34, Oak St, Coolbaugh St, and at a railroad crossing. The original construction was completed in 1962 and turned over to the City of Red Oak for operations and maintenance.
Performance & Condition General text description of the historical and anticipated performance of the levee, the people and property benefitting from the levee and who may be at risk of flooding, and actions to address areas of concern.
